The culprit was a cryptographer. He had known about the existence of this property for some time, but had no idea where it was, so he used the incident to try to figure it out. He killed the priest and forced Robert to decipher the letter to serve his own purpose. However, the twist is that the moment he tries to steal the jewel, the clock tower mechanism activates and he is trapped.
